In this article we provide a clear overview of what Artificial Intelligence is and how it can be used in combination with drones by answering the following questions: What is Artificial Intelligence? What are the different types of AI? and What industries are AI and machine learning with drones benefiting? Keep reading to learn all about AI to #ONEUPYOURBUSINESS!

WHAT IS ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE?

Artificial intelligence is commonly abbreviated as AI. AI is a form of computer science to build smart machines capable of performing tasks that typically require the human mind and human intelligence. You may interact with AI on a daily basis and not even know it when using virtual assistants such as Apple's Siri and Amazon's Alexa.

Machine learning is also associated with AI and can be used to identify common patterns and trends and apply them to new sets of data. Artificial intelligence algorithms mainly use real-time data to make decisions and to create responses. Using sensors, digital data, or remote inputs, it merges all the information from a variety of different sources, analyses the material and then acts on the insights from the collected data. AI is built by humans to reach conclusions based on instant analysis.

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF AI?

Before we discuss how we can use AI with drones, it is important to note that there are two types of AIs:

  • Narrow AI
  • General AI

Narrow AI is the one you are probably most familiar with as it is systems that have been taught and learned how to perform specific tasks without being explicitly programmed to do so. For example: virtual assistance on smartphones and vision recognition in self-driving vehicles.

General AI is the one you are most likely to see in movies. It is capable of learning and conducting various tasks like a human being such as building spreadsheets to cutting hair.

WHAT INDUSTRIES ARE AI AND MACHINE LEARNING WITH DRONES BENEFITING?

Drones have built-in programmes and use technology such as GPS, navigation systems, sensors and cameras. The combination of drones and AI and machine learning can make flying drones smarter, capturing real-time data during flight, the drones can make human decisions based on the processed data. Here are several industries that can benefit from using drones with AI and machine learning intelligence:

  • Retail: As AI drones offer more sustainable methods and help reduce greenhouse gas emissions by replacing vehicles, companies such as Amazon are now using AI drones to deliver goods to customer's doorsteps
  • Agriculture and Farming: Farmers can use AI drones to monitor and manage their crops as drones provide the capabilities of monitoring crops, assessing soil, determining specific areas that need to be sprayed with pesticides or fertilisers and what amount is needed, and so on. AI drones play an important role when it comes to making sure crops are of high-quality and healthy
  • Construction: Construction companies can use AI drones to scan or map the terrain of buildings much more quickly and efficiently compared to traditional methods like using a human as this can take up to weeks when compared to drones. Drones provide accurate information and a birds-eye view of the project helping the construction industry to save time and money
  • Real estate: Real estate can use drones to take highly detailed pictures and videos of properties and commercial assets and provide customers with local information and aerial maps to give then an enhanced viewing experience without them physically having them to visit the site
  • Military: AI drones are useful to the military as they can be used to patrol borders, monitor security, perform inspections without putting humans at risk, and deliver food supplies as a few examples
  • Security and surveillance: To make people feel safer and secure especially in unsafe areas, AI drones can be used to detect suspicious activities and people with the use of face recognition cameras to create a trouble free environment
